Your son who loved basketball stopped going to practice, said he was tired all the time. Then came the night you found the cuts on their arms, or the day the school counselor called about the panic attack, or the moment you walked into their room and saw how thin they had become. The pediatrician asked about screen time. The therapist mentioned social media. But everyone uses it, you thought. How could an app do this?
You blamed yourself. You should have set better limits. You should have seen the signs earlier. Your child blamed themselves too. They felt weak, broken, unable to control their own mind. The depression felt like it came from nowhere. The anxiety seemed to be just who they were now. The hours spent scrolling, the inability to stop checking notifications, the panic when the phone died—everyone said that was just being a teenager in 2024.
But what if it was not about willpower or bad parenting or a chemical imbalance that appeared by chance? What if the platforms were designed, deliberately and methodically, to create exactly these outcomes in young users? What if the companies building these apps knew they were causing psychological harm to minors and chose not to warn anyone because the business model depended on addictive behavior?
What Happened
The injury is not just excessive use. It is a cluster of serious mental health conditions that emerged in adolescents who used social media platforms intensively during their developmental years. Young people describe feeling unable to stop using the apps even when they desperately want to. They experience severe anxiety when separated from their devices. They feel worthless after scrolling through curated images of other people. They stay awake until three or four in the morning watching short videos, knowing they have school the next day, unable to stop.
The depression is pervasive and often severe. Teenagers describe feeling empty, hopeless, like nothing matters. Some lose interest in activities they once loved. Others cannot get out of bed. The anxiety manifests as constant worry, racing thoughts, physical symptoms like chest tightness and difficulty breathing. Panic attacks become common. Social situations that used to feel normal now feel terrifying.
Self-harm rates have increased dramatically. Cutting, burning, other forms of self-injury—behaviors that were once relatively rare among adolescents became epidemic. Some young people describe it as the only way to feel something real, to break through the numbness. Others say it is a way to punish themselves for not looking like the filtered images they see hundreds of times per day.
Eating disorders surged in populations that previously had lower rates. The Connection
Social media platforms harm adolescent mental health through several distinct mechanisms, each documented in peer-reviewed research and in some cases in the companies' own internal studies.

Snap Inc executives knew that teens were losing sleep to maintain streaks. All three companies conducted research on teen mental health and platform use. All three found evidence of harm. All three continued to design products to maximize engagement in young users. The business model required addictive use. Monthly active users and daily time spent on platform were the metrics that determined company valuation. Warning parents or changing product design would reduce those metrics.
How They Kept It Hidden
The companies used multiple strategies to prevent public understanding of the mental health harms they had documented internally.
First, they funded favorable research. Meta, TikTok, and Snapchat all provided grants to academic researchers studying social media and mental health. These grants often came with restrictions on data access and publication rights. Who Is Affected
If your child used Instagram, TikTok, or Snapchat regularly during adolescence and developed depression, anxiety, an eating disorder, or engaged in self-harm, they may have been harmed by these platforms.
Regular use typically means opening the app most days, spending an hour or more per day on the platform, or showing signs of compulsive use like checking the app first thing in the morning, during meals, in the bathroom, or in the middle of the night.
The vulnerable age range is roughly 10 to 19, the years when the brain is still developing and when identity formation is most active. Younger users were more vulnerable, but college-age users were also affected.
Girls and young women were disproportionately harmed, particularly by Instagram. The platform's focus on appearance, the prevalence of filtered and edited images, and the algorithm's tendency to recommend extreme diet and beauty content created severe body image issues and eating disorders.
LGBTQ youth were also disproportionately affected. While these platforms could provide community and support, they also exposed vulnerable young people to bullying, comparison, and harmful content. If your child watched extreme diet content, fitness content, or what-I-eat-in-a-day videos before developing an eating disorder, the platform algorithm likely amplified harmful content. If they watched self-harm content or suicide-related content before engaging in those behaviors, the same algorithmic amplification likely occurred.
Where Things Stand
As of 2024, hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Meta, TikTok, and Snapchat on behalf of minors who suffered mental health harm from platform use. These cases are consolidated in multidistrict litigation in the Northern District of California. The consolidated cases include claims from individual families and from school districts that have incurred costs treating the mental health crisis among students.
The legal theories include product liability, negligence, and failure to warn. Plaintiffs argue that the platforms are defective products because they were designed to be addictive to minors.
