Overview of the Paraquat Litigation
Thousands of people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease after exposure to the herbicide paraquat have filed lawsuits alleging the chemical caused their condition. The federal cases are consolidated in MDL No. 3004 in the Southern District of Illinois before Chief Judge Nancy J. Rosenstengel. Syngenta and Chevron U.S.A. are the main defendants. Syngenta denies that paraquat causes Parkinson's disease.[1]
An MDL, or multidistrict litigation, is a procedure that combines similar federal cases from around the country before one judge for coordinated pretrial proceedings. Each case remains separate, but discovery and motion practice are handled together to avoid duplication and inconsistent rulings.
Pre-MDL Settlement
In June 2021, before the MDL was formally organized, Syngenta and another defendant settled with some paraquat claimants for $187.5 million, according to Syngenta's annual report.[1]
April 2025 Settlement Agreement
In April 2025, the parties in the paraquat MDL signed a letter agreement meant to resolve many of the pending federal cases. The terms of that agreement were not made public.[1]
Philadelphia Trial Averted
On January 27, 2026, Syngenta and Chevron settled the first paraquat Parkinson's case set for trial in Philadelphia the night before trial was to begin. The case was pending in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.[2]
Qualified Settlement Fund Request
In February 2026, the plaintiffs and Syngenta jointly asked the court to approve a qualified settlement fund in the MDL. A qualified settlement fund is a court-supervised account that pays claimants once their eligibility is confirmed. The joint request indicated that hundreds of plaintiffs had rejected their settlement offers.[3]
When a settlement fund is established, claimants typically must submit documentation showing they meet certain criteria, such as proof of exposure and a qualifying diagnosis. The court oversees the fund to ensure payments are made according to the settlement terms.
Syngenta Manufacturing Decision
Syngenta announced it would stop making paraquat by the end of June 2026, calling it a commercial decision.[4]
Current Status as of October 2026
As of October 1, 2026, the paraquat MDL had 6,602 pending cases. No final global settlement terms had been made public, and new cases were still being filed.[5]
The record we track does not show that any trial has been completed or that any court has ruled on the merits of the claim that paraquat causes Parkinson's disease. The litigation remains in progress.
What Is Not Known Yet
The terms of the April 2025 letter agreement have not been disclosed publicly. The record we track does not show whether the court has approved the qualified settlement fund requested in February 2026, how many claimants have accepted settlement offers, what the eligibility criteria are, or what individual claimants may receive.
The record we track does not show whether any trials are scheduled in the MDL or in state courts, or whether additional settlements have been reached since January 2026.
No court has issued a ruling on whether paraquat causes Parkinson's disease or on any other substantive claim in these cases.
