What They Knew And When They Knew It

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, conducted internal research for years showing their platforms harm teenage mental health. In 2019, Facebook researchers created a fake Instagram account for a 13-year-old girl interested in extreme dieting. The algorithm immediately began serving content promoting anorexia.
