You found searches on her device at three in the morning: why do I hate myself, how to be prettier, am I good enough. When you finally got her into therapy, the psychologist used words like major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety, body dysmorphic disorder. Your daughter was fourteen years old. You asked yourself what you did wrong. You wondered if it was genetics, if it was the divorce, if it was something you said five years ago that broke something inside her. The guilt was suffocating.
Or maybe it was your son. He stopped seeing friends. His grades collapsed. He spent six, seven, eight hours a day watching videos, scrolling, refreshing, locked into a pattern he could not break even when he wanted to. When you took the phone away, he raged or withdrew into a silence so complete it terrified you. A school counselor eventually told you the words: social media addiction, clinical depression, suicidal ideation. He was sixteen. You thought you were being a good parent by letting him have the same technology all his friends had.
What nobody told you, what your pediatrician did not know, what the platforms never warned you about, was that this was not random. This was not bad luck. This was not your failure as a parent or your child's personal weakness. This was the result of design decisions made in corporate offices in Silicon Valley, decisions informed by internal research that predicted exactly what would happen to developing brains exposed to these products. They knew. And they built it anyway.
What Happened
The injuries look different in every child, but the patterns are consistent. It starts with what looks like normal use. Your kid gets a smartphone, downloads the apps their friends use. Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat. At first it seems harmless. Social connection. Entertainment. A way to stay in touch.
Then something shifts. The usage stops being something they control and becomes something that controls them. They wake up and immediately check their phone. They scroll through hundreds of posts before school. They post photos and then compulsively check to see how many likes they got. They compare themselves to the images they see, images that have been filtered and edited and curated to show an impossible standard. They feel inadequate. They feel ugly. They feel like failures.
The anxiety builds first. A constant low-level panic about missing something, about not being included, about falling behind in the social hierarchy that plays out in comments and likes and follower counts. They cannot focus on homework. They cannot sleep. Their nervous system is in a state of perpetual activation.
Then comes the depression. A heaviness that settles in. Loss of interest in things they used to love. Withdrawal from family and in-person friendships. A sense of hopelessness. For many kids, this is when the self-harm starts. Cutting. Burning. Hitting themselves. The physical pain is a release from the emotional pain, or it is a way to feel something when everything else feels numb.
Eating disorders emerge. Girls especially, though boys too, internalize the beauty standards they see in thousands of images every day. They start restricting food. They develop anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder. They look in the mirror and hate what they see because it does not match the filtered, edited, impossible images that have rewired their understanding of what bodies should look like.
For some, the depression becomes suicidal. They start thinking about death as a solution. Some make plans. Some attempt. Some succeed. Between 2010 and 2020, the suicide rate for young people aged 10 to 24 increased by 57 percent. Emergency room visits for self-harm among girls aged 10 to 14 tripled between 2009 and 2015. These are not isolated incidents. This is a public health crisis.
The Connection
Social media platforms are engineered to be addictive. This is not an accident or an unintended side effect. It is the core business model. These companies make money by capturing attention. The longer you use the app, the more ads they can show you, the more data they can collect, the more money they make. Every feature is designed to maximize engagement, which is corporate language for addiction.
The mechanism works like this: When you post something and get likes or comments, your brain releases dopamine. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter associated with reward and pleasure. It is the same chemical involved in gambling addiction, drug addiction, and every other behavioral addiction. The platforms use variable reward schedules, the same psychological principle that makes slot machines so addictive. Sometimes you post and get a lot of likes. Sometimes you get a few. Sometimes you get none. You never know what you will get, so you keep checking, keep posting, keep refreshing. Your brain becomes trained to seek that dopamine hit.
The infinite scroll feature means there is no natural stopping point. You can always see one more post. The autoplay video feature means you do not have to make a decision to keep watching; it happens automatically. The notification badges create anxiety that can only be relieved by opening the app. The read receipts and typing indicators create social pressure to respond immediately. The streaks feature on Snapchat literally punishes you for not using the app every single day.
For adolescent brains, which are still developing and are more plastic and more vulnerable than adult brains, these features are especially damaging. The prefrontal cortex, which governs impulse control and decision-making, does not fully develop until the mid-twenties. Adolescents are neurologically less capable of regulating their technology use. They are more susceptible to social comparison. They are more vulnerable to anxiety and depression. The platforms know this.
A 2019 study published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology found that adolescents who spent more than three hours per day on social media faced double the risk of mental health problems, particularly internalizing problems like depression and anxiety. A 2020 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association examined data from nearly 7,000 adolescents and found a significant association between social media use and depression symptoms. The more time spent on social platforms, the higher the depression scores.
A 2021 study from Brigham Young University found that the more often young adults checked social media, the higher their levels of depression, regardless of how much time they spent on the platforms. It was the compulsive checking, the inability to stop, that correlated with mental health harm. This is the definition of addiction: continued use despite negative consequences, loss of control, compulsive behavior.
What They Knew And When They Knew It
In September 2021, a former Facebook product manager named Frances Haugen testified before Congress and released thousands of pages of internal Facebook documents. These documents, which became known as the Facebook Files, revealed what the company knew about the harm its platforms were causing to young users.
Facebook conducted its own internal research in 2019 examining Instagram use among teenagers. The research found that 32 percent of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse. The research found that teens blamed Instagram for increases in anxiety and depression. One internal document stated: We make body image issues worse for one in three teen girls. Another stated: Teens who struggle with mental health say Instagram makes it worse.
Facebook researchers presented these findings to executives. They recommended changes to reduce harmful content. Those recommendations were largely ignored. Instead, the company continued to pursue what internal documents called the teen growth strategy. They wanted more young users, not fewer. They studied how to get children as young as ten years old onto the platform.
An internal Instagram presentation from March 2020 acknowledged that the platform could lead to a comparison trap where users felt their lives were worse than what they saw on Instagram. The document noted this was especially true for teenagers. They knew the product was causing psychological harm. They measured it. They discussed it. They kept building features designed to increase engagement.
In 2017, Facebook published a research blog post acknowledging that passive consumption of social media, scrolling through feeds without active engagement, was associated with negative mental health outcomes. They knew that the way most people use their platform was making them feel worse. They did not redesign the platform to discourage passive scrolling. They optimized for more of it.
TikTok internal documents, revealed through litigation and investigative reporting, show the company tracked what they called user addiction metrics. They measured how quickly users returned to the app after closing it. They measured how long users could be kept watching videos. They built algorithms designed to maximize what they internally called time spent, fully aware that excessive use was harmful, particularly for young users. A 2021 internal TikTok document described their algorithm as a dopamine-driven feedback loop.
Snapchat introduced the streaks feature in 2015. Internal communications show the company understood that streaks created social obligation and anxiety, particularly among young users who felt they could not afford to lose a streak with a friend. This was not a bug. This was the intended function. Create a feature that punishes you for not using the app every day, and you have manufactured a reason for daily engagement.
In 2018, Snapchat conducted research showing that their platform contributed to sleep deprivation among teen users, who felt pressure to stay available and respond to messages late into the night. The company did not warn parents or users. They did not build features to encourage healthier sleep habits. They built features like Snap Map that increased social pressure to stay constantly connected.
All three companies, Meta (Facebook and Instagram), TikTok, and Snapchat, employed teams of psychologists, neuroscientists, and behavioral researchers whose job was to understand how to make their products more engaging, which meant more addictive. They studied dopamine responses. They studied variable reward schedules. They studied social validation mechanisms. They applied that research to product design. This was not accidental harm. This was engineered harm in service of profit.
How They Kept It Hidden
The platforms used multiple strategies to prevent the public, parents, and regulators from understanding the scope of harm their products caused.
First, they kept their most damaging internal research secret. The Facebook Files only became public because a whistleblower risked her career to release them. The companies did not voluntarily disclose what they knew. When researchers outside the company tried to study platform harms, the companies restricted access to data. They shut down tools that researchers used to study content on their platforms. They made independent research as difficult as possible.
Second, they funded friendly research. The companies gave grants to academic researchers and think tanks, creating financial incentives for those institutions to produce research favorable to the platforms. They promoted studies that showed minimal harm or positive effects of social media use. They cited this research in congressional testimony and regulatory filings, creating a false impression that the science was mixed or inconclusive.
Third, they used public relations campaigns to shift blame. When concerns about social media harm gained public attention, the companies responded with initiatives like digital wellness tools, screen time trackers, and educational campaigns about healthy use. These tools were superficial. They did not change the core addictive design. They put the responsibility on users, particularly young users, to self-regulate their use of a product engineered to be impossible to self-regulate. The message was: if you are having problems, it is your fault for not using our product responsibly.
Fourth, they targeted regulation. The companies spent hundreds of millions of dollars on lobbying to prevent laws that would restrict how they target minors, how they collect data, how they design addictive features. They argued that regulation would stifle innovation. They argued that parents, not platforms, were responsible for managing children's technology use. They fought against age verification requirements, against restrictions on data collection from minors, against requirements to disclose their algorithms or allow independent audits.
Fifth, they used nondisclosure agreements. When individual cases were brought against the platforms, the companies settled those cases with NDAs that prevented the plaintiffs from discussing what they learned in discovery. This kept evidence of company knowledge and misconduct from becoming public. Each family who settled had to stay silent, which meant the next family had no warning.
Why Your Doctor Did Not Tell You
Most pediatricians and family doctors did not warn you about social media addiction because they did not know. Medical training has not caught up to the reality of technology-related harms. The research showing the connection between heavy social media use and adolescent mental health problems has emerged primarily in the last ten years. Much of it has been published in psychology and public health journals that physicians do not regularly read.
The platforms did not provide clear warnings or educational materials to the medical community. They did not send information to pediatricians about addiction risk or mental health harm the way pharmaceutical companies are required to provide prescribing information about medication risks. There was no equivalent of a black box warning for social media.
Additionally, doctors were dealing with what looked like a massive increase in adolescent anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and self-harm, but the cause was not obvious. These are conditions that can have many contributing factors: genetics, trauma, stress, family dysfunction. When a teenager came in with depression, the doctor treated the depression. The idea that the smartphone in the kid's pocket was a primary cause, not just a contributing factor, was not part of the diagnostic framework most physicians were trained to use.
By the time the research became clear enough and widespread enough for medical organizations to issue guidance, millions of young people had already been harmed. The American Academy of Pediatrics did not issue comprehensive guidance on social media use until 2016, years after the platforms had already captured a generation of users. Even then, the guidance was relatively mild: recommendations about screen time limits and parental monitoring, not warnings about addiction and mental health crisis.
Your doctor was not trying to hide information from you. Your doctor did not have the information. The platforms made sure of that.
Who Is Affected
If your child had a smartphone and used social media platforms regularly during their adolescent years, they were exposed. The highest risk group is young people who started using these platforms between the ages of ten and seventeen, the critical years of brain development and identity formation.
The specific injury profile depends on usage patterns and individual vulnerability. Young people who spent more than three hours per day on social media faced significantly elevated risk. Young people who used the platforms late at night, disrupting sleep, faced additional harm. Young people who engaged in heavy social comparison, constantly checking how their posts performed or comparing themselves to influencers and peers, were particularly vulnerable to depression and eating disorders.
Girls faced higher rates of certain harms, particularly depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and body image issues. Boys faced higher rates of others, particularly compulsive use patterns and social withdrawal. But both were affected. This is not a gendered problem. This is a developmental problem. Adolescent brains exposed to products designed to addict them got addicted and suffered the psychological consequences.
You do not need to prove that social media was the only cause of your child's mental health problems. These platforms do not operate in isolation. They interact with other risk factors. But if your child was a heavy user of Instagram, TikTok, or Snapchat during adolescence, and they developed depression, anxiety, self-harm behaviors, or eating disorders during or shortly after that period of use, the connection is supported by both research and the companies' own internal documents.
Young adults who are now in their twenties and who grew up with these platforms, who spent their teenage years immersed in social media, are also affected. Many are now recognizing that the mental health struggles they experienced, struggles they blamed on themselves, were actually caused or significantly worsened by products designed to exploit their developing brains.
Where Things Stand
Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, and other social media companies on behalf of minors who suffered mental health injuries. Many of these cases have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation in the Northern District of California. The MDL, titled In re: Social Media Adolescent Addiction/Personal Injury Products Liability Litigation, was created in October 2022 and includes cases from across the country.
The lawsuits allege that the platforms designed their products to be addictive, that they knew these products caused mental health harm to young users, and that they failed to warn users and parents about these risks. The legal theories include product liability, negligence, and failure to warn. Plaintiffs are seeking to hold the companies accountable for the documented harms their products caused.
In addition to individual cases, school districts have filed lawsuits seeking to recover the costs of mental health services they have had to provide to students suffering from social media-related harms. These institutional plaintiffs bring significant resources and add pressure to the litigation.
The companies are fighting the cases aggressively. They argue that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a law that protects internet platforms from liability for user-generated content, shields them from these claims. They argue that parents are responsible for managing their children's technology use. They argue that the connection between social media use and mental health harm is not scientifically established, despite their own internal research showing exactly that connection.
As of 2024, the litigation is in the discovery phase. Plaintiffs' attorneys are obtaining internal company documents, deposing executives and engineers, and building the evidentiary record. The Facebook Files provided a roadmap, but there are more documents to uncover, more evidence of what these companies knew and when they knew it.
No global settlement has been reached. The companies have not admitted wrongdoing. But the volume of cases, the strength of the internal evidence, and the growing public awareness of platform harms are creating significant pressure. Bellwether trials, test cases that will help establish the value and viability of the claims, are expected in the coming years.
The legal process is slow. It will take years to resolve. But it is moving forward. Each document released, each deposition taken, each expert report filed adds to the public record of what these companies did and what they knew.
New cases are still being filed. If your child was harmed, if your family was harmed, the legal system is beginning to provide a path to accountability. Not justice, perhaps. Nothing can undo what happened. But accountability.
What happened to your child was not random. It was not your fault. It was not their fault. It was the result of business decisions made by executives who knew their products were harming young people and chose profit over safety. They knew that their platforms were causing depression and anxiety. They knew that vulnerable teenagers were developing eating disorders and self-harming after exposure to content their algorithms promoted. They knew that the features they built were addictive, particularly to developing brains. They had the research. They had the data. They built it anyway.

You were not given the information you needed to protect your child. The warnings that should have been there were deliberately withheld.
